Lithium vs AGM: Worth the Price?
This used to be a debate. It is not anymore. For van life, lithium (specifically LiFePO4) is the correct choice if you can afford the upfront cost. Here is why in plain terms:
- Usable capacity: A 100Ah lithium gives you 100Ah of usable power. A 100Ah AGM gives you 50Ah before you damage the battery. You effectively need twice the AGM capacity to match lithium.
- Lifespan: LiFePO4 lasts 3,000–5,000 cycles. AGM lasts 300–500. Over a 5-year van life period, AGM needs replacing 3–4 times; lithium does not.
- Weight: A 100Ah lithium weighs approximately 12kg. A 100Ah AGM weighs 28–30kg.
- Charge acceptance: Lithium accepts charge much faster — important for solar and DC-DC charging while driving.
The price gap has also narrowed significantly. 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries are now A$350–500 for reputable brands.
How Much Capacity Do You Need?
A simple guide for typical Australian van builds:
- Fridge + lighting + phone charging: 100Ah minimum, 120Ah comfortable
- Above + laptop (8 hours/day): 150–200Ah
- Full remote work setup (two screens, full day): 200–300Ah
- Couple, full-time, all comforts: 300Ah+
Top Picks

Battle Born is the benchmark lithium battery for van and RV builds. Made in the USA, 10-year warranty, exceptional customer service, and proven real-world performance. At A$700–800 it is expensive but the warranty and support justify the premium for serious full-time van lifers.
Price: A$700–800 per 100Ah
Warranty: 10 years
Cycle life: 3,000–5,000 cycles
AIMS Power 100Ah — Best Mid-Range
A solid mid-range option at A$450–550. Good build quality, 5-year warranty, and positive long-term owner reports from Australian users. The sweet spot of value and reliability for most builds.
Renogy Smart Lithium 100Ah — Best Value
At A$380–450, the Renogy Smart Lithium offers Bluetooth monitoring, a solid BMS, and Renogy's improving warranty support. Not quite Battle Born quality but genuinely good for the price. The Bluetooth monitoring is useful for daily power management.
Price: A$380–450 per 100Ah
Best for: Budget-conscious builds that still want lithium quality
Adventure Kings Lithium — Budget Option
At A$250–300, the Adventure Kings lithium is tempting. The BMS is adequate and for light use it performs reasonably. The warranty support is variable and the cells are not premium grade. Acceptable for weekend use; for full-time living we recommend spending more.
Important: You Need a Lithium-Compatible Charger
Do not connect lithium batteries to a standard AGM charger or isolator. You need either a DC-DC (DCDC) charger for charging from your alternator, or a lithium-profile solar charge controller. The Victron SmartSolar and REDARC BCDC chargers are both lithium-compatible and widely available in Australia.
