3M Thinsulate acoustic insulation β€” the gold standard for van walls and ceiling. Excellent thermal and acoustic properties, moisture resistant.

Pros

  • Moisture resistant (no mould)
  • Thermal and acoustic
  • Easy to cut and fit
  • No fibres or irritants
  • Gold standard for vans

Cons

  • Expensive vs foam alternatives
  • Needs some compression to fit cavities
  • Ceiling requires additional adhesive

3M Thinsulate SM600L is the insulation material most commonly recommended by experienced van builders for wall cavities and ceiling panels. It's a synthetic textile insulation that doesn't absorb moisture (unlike rockwool or fibreglass), provides genuine thermal resistance, and significantly reduces road noise.

How Much to Buy

A standard HiAce or Transit van requires approximately 10-15 linear metres of 1.5m wide Thinsulate to cover all wall and ceiling cavities. Buy extra β€” it's better to have leftover than to run short mid-build.

Our Verdict

4.7/5

3M Thinsulate acoustic insulation β€” the gold standard for van walls and ceiling. Excellent thermal and acoustic properties, moisture resistant.
