Step 1: Choose Your Van
The most popular vans for conversion are:
- Ford Transit — Most popular in North America. Available in multiple roof heights and lengths. Great dealer network.
- Mercedes Sprinter — The premium choice. German engineering, excellent fuel economy, but expensive to repair.
- Ram ProMaster — Front-wheel drive (easier on rough terrain), high roof standard on many models, but less reliable long-term.
- Dodge Grand Caravan — Budget-friendly stealth option. Remove the seats and you have a surprisingly livable space.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Before buying a single piece of lumber, sketch out your layout. Consider:
• Bed orientation (lengthwise or crosswise?)
• Kitchen placement (rear doors or side door access?)
• Storage needs
• Desk/workspace if working remotely
Step 3: Rust Treatment & Prep
Before any build work, address any rust. Sand down rust spots, apply a rust converter, and prime. Prevention is infinitely easier than repair once your build is complete.
Step 4: Insulation

Step 5: Electrical System

Lay your subfloor (typically 1/4 inch plywood or XPS foam board), then your finish floor. Vinyl plank flooring is extremely popular for van builds due to its water resistance, durability, and ease of installation.
Step 7: Wall Panels & Ceiling
Build your wall and ceiling panels from thin plywood or bamboo. These get covered with fabric, wood veneer, or spray paint depending on your aesthetic.
Step 8: Furniture Build
Now the fun part! Build your bed platform, kitchen cabinets, and storage. Use lightweight materials like Baltic birch plywood to keep weight down.

A basic van conversion can be done for $3,000-5,000. A mid-range build with quality components runs $8,000-15,000. High-end builds with all the bells and whistles can exceed $30,000.
