Why Convert a Van?
Van life has exploded in popularity β and for good reason. The freedom to wake up in a new place every day, work remotely from anywhere, and live with intention rather than paying rent on a space you rarely enjoy.
But the van conversion itself can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What tools do you need? How do you wire solar? This guide breaks it all down into manageable steps.
Step 1: Choose Your Van
The most popular vans for conversion are:
- Ford Transit β Most popular in North America. Available in multiple roof heights and lengths. Great dealer network.
- Mercedes Sprinter β The premium choice. German engineering, excellent fuel economy, but expensive to repair.
- Ram ProMaster β Front-wheel drive (easier on rough terrain), high roof standard on many models, but less reliable long-term.
- Dodge Grand Caravan β Budget-friendly stealth option. Remove the seats and you have a surprisingly livable space.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Before buying a single piece of lumber, sketch out your layout. Consider:
β’ Bed orientation (lengthwise or crosswise?)
β’ Kitchen placement (rear doors or side door access?)
β’ Storage needs
β’ Desk/workspace if working remotely
Step 3: Rust Treatment & Prep
Before any build work, address any rust. Sand down rust spots, apply a rust converter, and prime. Prevention is infinitely easier than repair once your build is complete.
Step 4: Insulation
Insulation is arguably the most important step in a van build. Good insulation keeps you warm in winter, cool in summer, and quiet year-round. We recommend 3M Thinsulate for its breathability and acoustic properties.
Step 5: Electrical System
Design your electrical system before building walls β you need to route wires before everything gets covered up. A typical van build electrical system includes solar panels, a charge controller, batteries, an inverter, and a 12V fuse box.
Step 6: Flooring
Lay your subfloor (typically 1/4 inch plywood or XPS foam board), then your finish floor. Vinyl plank flooring is extremely popular for van builds due to its water resistance, durability, and ease of installation.
Step 7: Wall Panels & Ceiling
Build your wall and ceiling panels from thin plywood or bamboo. These get covered with fabric, wood veneer, or spray paint depending on your aesthetic.
Step 8: Furniture Build
Now the fun part! Build your bed platform, kitchen cabinets, and storage. Use lightweight materials like Baltic birch plywood to keep weight down.
Budget Breakdown
A basic van conversion can be done for $3,000-5,000. A mid-range build with quality components runs $8,000-15,000. High-end builds with all the bells and whistles can exceed $30,000.
