Who Is This Review For?
If you are building out a van and looking for your first solar setup, you have almost certainly come across the Renogy 200W Solar Kit. It is consistently one of the top-selling van solar kits on Amazon, and for good reason.
We installed this kit in a 2020 Ford Transit 148" and used it as our primary power source for 6 months across 15 different states. Here is our honest take.
What Is In the Box?
- 1x 200W Monocrystalline Solar Panel
- 1x Wanderer 40A PWM Charge Controller
- 1x 20ft 10AWG MC4 Solar Cables
- 2x MC4 Branch Connectors
- 1x 8ft 10AWG Adapter Kit
- Mounting Z-brackets x4
Installation
Installation took about 4 hours for two people. The panel is large (58" x 26") and requires careful positioning. We used the included Z-brackets mounted to the roof with Dicor lap sealant around each bolt to prevent leaks.
Wiring from the roof through the van required drilling a hole and using a cable entry gland (sold separately — a minor annoyance the kit should include).
Performance
In full summer sun, the panel consistently produced 170-185W — close to its rated 200W. In overcast Pacific Northwest conditions, output dropped to 40-80W, which is still enough to maintain battery charge during typical light use days.
The Charge Controller
The included Wanderer 40A PWM controller does its job, but if you have the budget, we strongly recommend upgrading to an MPPT controller like the Victron SmartSolar. You will squeeze 20-30% more power from the same panel — especially valuable in partial shade or winter conditions.
Verdict: 4.5/5
The Renogy 200W Kit is an excellent starting point for van solar. It is competitively priced, well-built, and the kit format makes getting started simple. The main upgrade we recommend is swapping the PWM controller for MPPT. Otherwise, this is a solid buy.
